Lowell Is Up In The Air
Chris Lowell attended the premiere of movie Up In The Air which stars George Clooney.

On the red carpet, Lowell, who plays Clooney's assistant, told Ecollywood that he reduces his own carbon footprint by recycling and driving a Prius. When he travels by plane, he especially tries to avoid Dulles airport in Washington, D.C. “Better to fly to New York and take a train to D.C.,” he warns. Known best as Private Practice’s Dell, who has is currently involved in a major storyline in the US despite having his screen time cut down dramatically in the new season. Chris Lowell spoke to TV Addict (WARNING: link contains SPOILERS) about the decision to give Dell less screen time.

Lowell: When Shonda [Rhimes] and I talked about doing less episodes this season [Lowell will reportedly be in 13 of the season's 22 episodes] the idea behind it was instead of putting Dell in every episode where a lot of the times he wasn’t doing anything particularly significant to the episode, show, or plot give Dell less episodes, but make his roles in them more significant. Thursday is a huge episode, I certainly prefer coming to work and having really meaty stuff to do everyday. And from what I understand you’ll be seeing Dell around more and more.

TV Addict: Being significantly younger than the rest of the cast, how challenging has it been as an actor to fit into the practice?
Lowell: I think I had a similar struggle to my character in the sense that the whole plot-line for Dell in the first season was him trying to prove himself and trying to establish himself as a central member of the practice. And when you sign onto a show especially this show, a Shonda Rhimes show, with a cast which is so strikingly talented and when GREY’S ANTOMY was at its peek, where I’m like the wildcard essentially for me, it was a similar struggle, and not one imposed by anyone but myself wanting to prove to these other actors that I was good enough to work with them. The ironic thing is that I don’t think they ever treated me as anything less than equal. Getting to work with actors and writers this talented has been a really beautiful thing.

TV Addict: The first two seasons really had fans thinking that Naomi might one day reciprocate Dell’s feeling for her, do you think there’s any chance the story will go there during the latter half of the season?
Lowell: I hope so, I’ve been wanting Dell to get laid for a long time. I feel like the last time Dell had sex was when he impregnated Heather with Betsey! So I’m hoping that he’s gonna get a little action before the season ends, and frankly, I have absolutely no objection to that action being gotten with Audra McDonald (Naomi). That would make me very happy. But Shonda keeps her cards very close to the vest.

TV Addict: Do you still get recognized from VERONICA MARS?
Lowell: VERONICA MARS fans are the craziest fans of them all, and I mean that in a good way. I’ve never met any fans of any show who are as die hard as them. When I started on VERONICA MARS I remember the producers coming up to me and saying, “Look, don’t be offended but every one of the fans are going to hate you because you’re essentially breaking up Logan and Veronica! But we cast you because we’re hoping they won’t hate you as much.” I still hang out with those guys all the time. Ryan Hansen and Kristen Bell are two of my best friends out here. It was definitely a fun ride and I had a great time on that show.

TV Addict: And finally, your penchant for scoring roles with some of my favorite actors continues this December with the release of Up in the Air What was it like working with George Clooney and Jason Batemen on a Jason Reitman film?
Lowell: It was as cool as it sounds and just about sums it up in terms of the people who you want to be working with right now. Clooney, Batemen and Jason Reitman are just incredible professionals and when I say that I mean that not only do they have a very dedicated work ethic, on top of it they make it seem painless. I mean you wouldn’t want to leave the set. It was one of those rare occurrences when you’re just like, “Nah, let’s just stay for a couple more hours.” And I think it’s really all due to the atmosphere that Reimtan and Clooney create on set.

Viva Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell doesn’t just walk into a room — she breezes in and immediately fills it up. Not because she’s a big physical presence — after all, she stands only five-foot-one — and not because she’s gregarious — the actress speaks softly and succinctly — but the Michigan native who has undoubtedly become Hollywood’s new “it” girl, strides into the photo shoot high up in the Hollywood Hills, like she owns the place. Wearing Joe’s jeans, Coach embossed print sandals and a pink blazer over a grey loose tee, Bell is definitely savoring her time in the spotlight, looking every inch a Hollywood star, but minus the internal trappings of ego and attitude. In her short time since arriving in Los Angeles, via a New York University Fine Arts degree, Bell landed her breakout role in 2004 as a crime-solving school detective in Veronica Mars, segueing into electric-charging Elle on Heroes, the title character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the faceless narrator on Gossip Girl. Usually cast as a younger character rather than her true 29 years, Bell is relishing her new roles in the upcoming movies Couple’s Retreat (with Vince Vaughn) and When In Rome opposite Josh Duhamel and real-life boyfriend Dax Shepherd. “Vince is a comedy powerhouse,” she exclaims of the man who kept her laughing on- and off-camera. “I think laughter is vital, it’s number one in my overall well-being. I even think fart jokes are funny. Laughter provides so much to your emotional and mental health. And you have to be able to laugh at yourself — that’s the key.

More after the jump...

Bell Takes The Hot Seat
News flash: Kristen Bell is short. It’s easy to forget, since she’s always going toe-to-toe with giants like Josh Duhamel—a foot taller than the diminutive Bell—or a figurative rom-com heavyweight like Meg Ryan. As the marriage-spoiling other woman in December’s Serious Moonlight, Bell has to romance Oscar winner Timothy Hutton and go mano a mano with Ryan, all while trussed up in duct tape (it’s a comedy). Clearly, Bell never takes a break; she followed this fall’s Couples Retreat with a stint on the Starz show Party Down, continues to narrate Gossip Girl (“Be as sassy as possible,” she says of the voiceover process) and cheerleads for her canceled show Veronica Mars: “I truly feel that [show creator] Rob Thomas and I will shoot a movie, even if it’s in his backyard with my video camera,” she says. With a work ethic like that, we guess we can skip the 5'1" jokes.

So you face down Meg Ryan in this movie. Was it scary?
At points I felt myself daydreaming during the scene, because her mannerisms are so adorably hers. I was in the scene going, Meg Ryan is soooo cute, and then snapping out of it. And she was game for all of our wrestling matches on the bathroom floor. That just made me so happy.

Could you take her in real life?
Oh, I’m sure I could take her. I could also take Tim. I could take her and Tim at the same time. [Laughs]

Were you one of those rowdy NYU party kids when you were a student here? I live above an NYU bar, and they drive me batty.
We’re more similar than you think, because they kept me up at night, too. I was a very good girl. Though I did have a weird streak in my college career where I made fake IDs.

Impressive.
And here’s the weird thing—I have a spotless record. I was grounded only once growing up, and it’s just ’cause I sassed my mom. I’m pretty much a Goody Two-shoes; I’m not really proud or ashamed of that, it’s just how I am. But there was this time in college when I thought it was a really good idea to make fake IDs. I sold ’em for $20 a pop, then I went to Joyce Leslie and spent all of it.

Now you narrate Gossip Girl. I hear you want to show up onscreen.
I often jokingly threaten that if they don’t let me on the show soon, I’m gonna go to extras casting, get a job as a waitress on the show, and breeze by the camera and shoot one right down the barrel. Just let the audience know that I’m watching them.

It’s ’cause the show did a threesome, right? That’s why you want to appear.
I’ve seen the episode. And I pictured myself in there the entire time. Believe you me.

Who would join you in your ideal Gossip Girl threesome?
Hmm. Who would an anonymous waitress have a threesome with? Rufus, and Chuck. You gotta have a little Chuck in there.

You have three dogs already. When you get old, are you going to be a crazy dog lady?
I heard there was a man in Michigan who was found with, like, 600 Chihuahuas in his house. I’m lookin’ him up. Find out if he’s single, first and foremost. But then check out what the rules of the house were, what his game plan was. I could never go above three.

What’s with all those really tall guys you work with onscreen? Josh Duhamel, Jason Segel…
Keep ’em comin’. I am happy to chug a tall drink of water. Maybe it’s just the luck of the draw, or maybe, um, I have a bigger personality.

So people think you’re 5'11"?
Yeah, they think, Gotta put someone in the ring that can handle her.

Ever had to stand on something on set?
Ab. So. Lutely. Have I ever. Have I ever not had to stand on something? Jason Bateman would place bets on how many apple boxes I’d have to stand on throughout the day.

Balance is the key to being a movie star, then?
I’ve definitely mastered the art of walking off an apple box on my tiptoes so they don’t have to use a trail of apple boxes. When I step off, my level doesn’t change.

I assume that’s on your résumé, under “Skills.”
Absolutely, and I challenge you to find a scene where you can see me dip. I take pride in my walking work.
