While trying to navigate the everyday drama of high school, the smart, fearless, 17-year-old Veronica Mars also moonlights as an apprentice private investigator out to solve her wealthy town of Neptune's toughest mysteries. After coming to the aid of the new kid, Wallace Fennel, who's been duct-taped to the school's flagpole, Veronica ends up incurring the wrath of the thugs who put him there, Eli "Weevil" Navarro and his P.C.H. Biker Boyz. To get Weevil and his gang off her and Wallace's case, Veronica devises an intricate plan that helps some of Weevil's cronies avoid trouble with the law.
Meanwhile, defying her father, Keith Mars, the disgraced former sheriff turned private eye, Veronica pursues a late-night case of adultery against billionaire Jake Kane, only to make an unsettling discovery about her mother, who abandoned Veronica and Keith a year ago.

Veronica: Go Pirates!
Weevil: Sister, the only time I care what a woman has to say is when she's riding my big old hog, but even then its not so much words, just a bunch of "oohs" and "aahs," you know?
Veronica: So it's big, huh?
Weevil: Legendary.
Veronica: Well, let's see it. I mean, if it's as big as you say, I'll be your girlfriend. We could go to prom together.
Vice Principal Clemmons: Veronica, why does trouble follow you around?
Sheriff Don Lamb: You need to go see the Wizard. As him for some guts.
Veronica: You wanna know how I lost my virginity? So do I.
Veronica: I'm no longer that girl.
Keith: You know what, this is important. You remember this: I used to be cool.
Veronica: When?
Keith: '77. Trans-Am, Blue Oyster Cult in the 8-track, a foxy stacked blonde riding shotgun, racing for pink slips. Aw, wait a minute, I'm thinking of a Springsteen song. Scratch everything, I was never cool.
Veronica: I don't know which bothers me more, "foxy" or "stacked"....
Keith: Who's your Daddy?
Veronica: I hate it when you say that.
Sheriff Don Lamb: Tell you what, Veronica Mars. Why don't you go see the Wizard. Ask for a little backbone.
Wallace: You're a marshmallow, Veronica Mars. A twinkie.
Logan: You know what your little joke cost me?
Veronica: Well, I'm pretty sure you won't be getting your bong back.
Veronica: Be cool, Soda Pop
Keith: Who's your Daddy?
Veronica: [smiling] You are.
Veronica: Ok, it's a long shot but I can't help myself. I used to think I knew what tore our family apart. Now I'm sure I don't. But I promise this - I will find out what really happened, and I will bring this family back together again. I'm sorry, is that mushy? Well, you know what they say; Veronica Mars, she's a marshmallow.
In the original script for the pilot, Veronica's reply to Logan's question about what her "little joke" cost him was actually, "I'm pretty sure you won't be getting your cock bong back." Kristen Bell has stated that this was her favourite line in the script. When asked to guess again, Veronica replied, "Hours of sexual gratification."
The pilot was originally going to contain the line, "Yeah, I think she's cute, too" which came from Weevil. Obviously he was talking about Veronica who overheard him say it.
Rob Thomas used strong language in his pilot script which had to be removed.
Neptune High, the school at the centre of the story and one which our heroine attends was originally going to be called Peninsula High.
Logan's surname was changed before the filming of the Pilot from Hewitt, and the Kane family as we know them now were going to be the Caine family.
The now famous "Go see the Wizard. Ask him for some guts" line from Sheriff Lamb was originally, "Grow up. Get some balls."
Lilly's bloody body by the pool was not part of the original plot. In the flashback in the pilot, Lilly was assumed missing and probably kidnapped and then the live stream of her body found in the ocean was submitted over the internet by her murderer.
The car Veronica pictured at the Camelot Motel where Jake Kane visited was to be registered to Abel Koontz. In the pilot that aired, the car belonged to Lianne Mars, Veronica's mother.
